EA shut down the servers for Battlefield 2142 two years ago. The team-based FPS built upon the established conventions of Battlefield 2 and took place in the near future, where the European Union and the Pan-Asian Coalition (which includes Russians) go to war over the last remaining resources on a desiccated planet Earth.
Pretty cool, right? I certainly thought so at the time. Either way, the game ran its course until EA finally decided to shut down the servers due to lack of players. If you’ve ever wished you could play it again, you can do so now.
A fan project called the Battlefield 2142 Revive Project has resurrected the game from the dead, along with rankings and leaderboards—just like the real thing.
The game has about a thousand active players, which isn’t too bad for a dead game. Because it serves an extremely niche community, EA hasn’t made any indications that it plans to shut it down. It might do that eventually, but for now, you can play the game.
Simply head on over to the project website, download the client, and game on.
