David Jaffe, the creator of God of War and Twisted Metal, believes that the next generation of consoles will be their last.
"Look, consoles are going away," he said in an interview with GI International. "I think in 10 years—probably sooner, but in 10 years is always the safe thing to say so you don't sound like an idiot—but here's what I'll say: I'll go on the record and say that the next generation of hardware will be the last consoles. And they should be."
Jaffe clarified that console makers like Sony would most likely allow users to stream videogames in the future. He believes that companies like Sony will become more like movie studios for videogames.
"I'll be able to stream in the next Uncharted and Plants vs Zombies and you won't even think about it. It'll just be like I can watch a public access show on my TV or I can watch Avatar."
Jaffe thinks that the next generation of console hardware, which would include the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720 (neither of which have been announced) will only have 40 percent of the sales of current generation hardware.
I'll throw my hat in with Jaffe's assessment and add that streaming services like OnLive and Gaikai may well represent the future of videogames—for both the PC and its console counterparts.
