Xbox One S has a faster GPU, improves performance on certain games

August 2, 2016 by Kris Kittie

The Overclock GPU can result in significant framerate improvement.

The new Xbox One S will have a faster GPU than the original console. This will result in improved performance on certain games, according to Digital Foundry.

These games include Project CARS and Hitman are sporting higher frame rates on this new console, and Rise of the Tomb Raider and Batman: Arkham Knight suffer from less tearing.

The console’s GPU has been overclocked from 853MHz to 914MHz in the Xbox One S, which lends to higher compute performance (up from 1.31TF to 1.4TF) and ESRAM Bandwidth, which increases from 204GB/s to 219GB/s.

Microsoft has said that the intention behind this added power is to let developers create HDR-supported titles with no hit on performance. This has, as an added bonus, been opened up to all titles.

Although it will improve performance for some, it will not do so for all games. This improvement is most likely to affect titles that have an unlocked framerate or dynamic resolution.

“Xbox One S, yes it is faster,” says Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter. “Are you likely to notice the difference? In the majority of cases, probably not. But yeah, it adds a small layer of additional polish to some games, and when you can’t reach the framerate targets on older Xbox One hardware this one will get you closer to 30fps, 60fps, or whatever.”

The Xbox One S launches today for £349.99 and the console can be ordered from Amazon.co.uk.
