Nicholas Lovell, founder of Gamesbrief, spoke to EDGE in regards to the upcoming Elder Scrolls MMO. The analyst said he expects Zenimax Online to begin with subscriptions and then switch at a later date. This trend has become increasingly popular among today’s MMORPG scene.
“I still believe that subscription games are on the way out. It is conceivable that Bethesda will launch with a subscription service to attract the early adopters, because that is the model they understand,” he said.
“They will switch to free-to-play later, in the same way that many iOS games go from paid to freemium over their lifetime. EA is struggling with The Old Republic – almost everyone else is transitioning to free-to-play.”
Development on the Elder Scrolls Online began all the way back in 2007, which means that the game has certainly had its fair share of time to come into its own. With a MAC/PC release slated for 2013, we here at Gameranx are very excited to see what is next for this game.
