InXile has just released one of the first pieces of concept artwork for their Kickstarter-funded title, Wasteland 2. The deadline for the Kickstarter fund is close approaching, but it has since been funded well beyond its initial goal.
Once the Kickstarter fund reaches $2.1M, the developers at inXile plan to enlist the help of Obsidian Entertainment and writer Chris Avellone to help work on the game and develop its dialogue system.
Wasteland 2 is the sequel to the RPG from 1998, and spiritual predecessor of Fallout. The game also served as the inspiration for many RPGs and post-apocalyptic games. Despite having acquired the license for Wasteland, the developers at inXile had difficulty finding financial backing from mainstream publishers and turned towards Kickstarter in the wake of Double Fine's success with the website.
The newly released concept artwork shows off the game's Desert Rangers, an organization that serves as the law in the post-apocalyptic wasteland in which the game is set. The Desert Rangers were the inspiration behind the New California Republic Rangers in both Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas.
