Plex, the makers of Plex Media Server have announced the first all-in-one Plex box with NVIDIA SHIELD. For those not in the know, Plex Media Server is an app designed for a variety of Android TV and other devices that allows anyone to stream video to TVs without the need for a dedicated PC or Mac. All you need is a device capable of running Plex hooked up to the TV to stream video through WiFI. The app currently supports over 40 devices and the NVIDIA SHIELD is next on the list.
Thanks to the device’s powerful NVIDIA Tegra X1 processor, you’ll be able to stream hardware-accelerated 4K video at full 60fps. The SHIELD’s storage of 500gb provides a lot of space to store movies and TV shows on and it’s also WiFi compatible if you want to add more stuff to it.
Apart from being designed for gamers who want to stream PC games to their TV, the upcoming 500GB NVIDIA SHIELD Pro is designed with Plex in mind so you can copy your downloaded TV shows and movies onto the device and watch them there. The SHIELD can then stream it to any connected device, including PCs, smart TVs, tablets and mobile phones.
The specs on the SHIELD makes it the only system capable of providing high quality hardware transcoding (H.264, MPEG2 and HEVC) on videos right now, with support for multiple simultaneous streams.
The NVIDIA SHIELD Pro retails for $299.99.
