Disney could have added a video game industry giant to their books, as recently as two years ago.
On February 2024, Disney announced they invested $ 1.5 billion into Epic Games. That gave them 10 % of an equity stake into the company, and this investment would go into substantially big Disney experiences in Fortnite.
As reported by Insider Gaming, Disney CCO and President Dana Walden was recently asked point blank if Disney considered buying Epic Games completely. Dana said this:
It was pretty obvious that we had very serious questions about an investment and an equity stake. Those are not the conversations we’re having right now.
We have a great partnership and a number of launches coming up in the next two years that are going to demonstrate the value of this partnership.
So far, Epic Games launched an AI Darth Vader Fortnite event in 2025 and multiple Fortnite x Star Wars experiences earlier this year.
As for the prospect of Disney buying Epic Games, it may not necessarily be the best move for either company or the video game industry. But it seems Disney understands that quite clearly.
