Resident Evil Requiem Director Reveals What Intrigued Him Over Raccoon City

September 1, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Koshi Nakanishi had a nagging question in his head about Raccoon City since its demise.

Resident Evil has been around for decades now. It’s a franchise that has inspired many other iconic survival horror games. While the series had some ups and downs, the classic games recently saw a new lease on life. That’s thanks to the various remakes, which give fans an updated look at Raccon City before its infamous downfall. The next game to hit the market is Resident Evil Requiem, and what makes this game so special is that we’re going back to where it all started: Raccoon City.

This isn’t anything new for fans. We knew that we were heading back to the OG city location for the franchise. Of course, if you haven’t heard, Resident Evil Requiem will be heading to Raccoon City, decades after the events of Resident Evil 3. With this return, which has so many fans excited, we’re learning what in particular inspired the director behind this game, Koshi Nakanishi, to venture back to Raccoon City.

Resident Evil Requiem Director Compares The Return To A Rice Cooker

Gamescom took place last month, and we’re still receiving interviews from various publications. For instance, thanks to Automaton Media, we’re learning that 4Gamer interviewed the game director, Koshi Nakanishi, and producer, Masato Kumazawa. During the conversation, it was asked if the two had always wondered what happened to Raccoon City.

According to Nakanishi, what had him wondering was what happened to the people involved and those around them after. Likewise, he wanted to conduct a proper investigation into the matter. In an analogy, Koshi describes it as forgetting about cooking rice in a rice cooker. A week later, when you remember, you wonder what happens if you open up the rice cooker.

It’s not going to be pleasant, that’s for sure. Meanwhile, Masato Kumazawa stated that after Ethan Winters’ storyline was completed in Resident Evil Village, he felt that it now makes perfect sense to tackle the story of current-day Raccoon City.

We’re excited to check out this game and see what it has to offer. For instance, we know that there’s a new stalker monster, one that has a unique way of dealing with it, according to the game director. Likewise, we recently learned that Resident Evil 7 was the reason developers opted to release this upcoming game with a third-person camera perspective option.

Currently, Resident Evil Requiem is set to release on February 27, 2026. At launch, the game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
