Billbil-kun has a big rumor on what will be revealed in today’s Nintendo Direct.

Billbil-kun wrote predictions for what will be in the Switch 2 Direct Partner Showcase. Those predictions included a new Octopath Traveler. They said this (translated with DeepL):
A new Octopath Traveler game to be announced soon?
According to our latest findings, a third installment in the Octopath Traveler saga is about to be officially announced.
The game is expected to be called “Octopath Traveler 0,” and this new episode will be released on Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
Its release date is still unknown, but its price will be in line with that of the previous installment, at $59.99.
How Credible Is It?
Square Enix recently started a three year ‘reboot’ plan. They did this after a severe string of failed and underperforming games created a crisis in the company. They already decided last year to shift to make fewer games and bring them to as many platforms as possible.
It makes sense for Square Enix’s next games to go to multiple platforms. But does it make sense for them to make more Octopath Traveler games?
The Case For Octopath Traveler
The Octopath Traveler games don’t sell at the same scale as their biggest 3D action RPGs. However, they also cost considerably less to make. Team Asano, who makes these games, has also earned a lot of critical acclaim for their highly polished game design.
Last month, they brought the first two Octopath Traveler games outside of their exclusivity contracts. They are now all available on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch.
The Case Against Octopath Traveler
We believe there is reason to doubt if billbil-kun’s rumor is real. We don’t know how long it took Team Asano to make Octopath Traveler, but there is a five year gap between it and Octopath Traveler II.
Octopath Traveler II itself just released in 2023. Maybe Team Asano and Square Enix can make an Octopath Traveler III in less than five years. But it still looks like two years is not enough time.
It is possible that Square Enix is announcing an Octopath Traveler 0, but the game isn’t releasing yet. Square Enix may want to take advantage of the publicity of the Nintendo Direct.
That could explain why they’re willing to announce a game that might take until 2026 or even 2027 to release. But Square Enix and Team Asano could give us a pleasant surprise as well, in a few hours.
