Could Grand Theft Auto VI Get Delayed Again?

May 14, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

The game industry is actively watching Rockstar Games.

You’re all aware of Rockstar Games’ delay of Grand Theft Auto VI. It was an impossible news article to miss. Everyone has been waiting for this game installment to release, and it was the most anticipated game of 2025 until that moment hit. Now, all eyes are on its upcoming release in May 2026. However, some developers are on edge to see if Rockstar Games can actually get this game out on time.

Thanks to Dexerto, we’re finding out that Jason Schreier released a Bloomberg report recently commenting on what he has heard, along with some speculation. Jason noted that there is nothing guaranteed right now that the developers will get the game into the marketplace on May 26, 2026. That’s the current release date for this title, but as Jason noted, this game could get pushed back even further.

Meanwhile, Jason noted that people working on games slated for fall 2026 are praying Rockstar Games doesn’t slip again. While others have been hopeful that’s the case, as it would give the teams an excuse to delay their projects to 2027, allowing more time to prepare the projects for the public.

In other conversations, people working on games slated for fall 2026 told me they are praying that Rockstar doesn’t slip again — or in some cases, that it does, so they have an excuse to delay to 2027 and score more time.

It’s a massive game of 4D chess playing out across the entire video-game industry, as business analysts at every major company try to discern whether Rockstar will actually finish the game in time for a May 2026 release date so they can plan accordingly. – Jason Schreier

There’s so much hype and anticipation over GTA 6 that it will make a colossal wave whenever it drops. So, obviously, plenty of developers out there are extra cautious right now about when they will launch their upcoming titles. Now that this game has been confirmed to be delayed out of this calendar year, it might have been a relief for some developers who had games ready for a launch before 2026.

In related news, a leaker who has proven credible in the past for Grand Theft Auto VI noted that developers had to delay the game. Several notable cuts were made to the project as Rockstar Games attempted to release this title on schedule. With this extra year, it should keep most, if not all, of the planned content intact.
