While no one likes to deal with “false alarms,” it’s also true that sometimes…a false alarm can lead to something big. Last week, during a Comic-Con in Naples, Yuji Horii was doing a panel about the RPG franchise he created and “accidentally confirmed” via a translator that Chrono Trigger was getting a remake, too. The crowd naturally went nuts, and then the internet went nuts because this was something that many had wanted for a long time. However, hours after the “reveal,” video of the event was released, and it proved that there was indeed a mistranslation and the remake was NOT confirmed after all.
However, when things like this happen, you tend to get people asking others about whether this could happen “for real.” Sure enough, Yuji Horii was asked by GameReactor if he would be up for a remake of the title, and this is what he had to say on the matter:
“Yes, I want to do something. Currently, Dragon Quest has seen III, I & II Remakes. I get a lot of requests for the remake of Chrono Trigger as well, and so I’m starting to contemplate on it.”
While many would argue that this isn’t “confirmation” of any kind, that’s not the point. The fact is that he’s actively “contemplating it,” and that’s something to hold onto, even if only for a little bit. The reason that so many people want this particular remake is because it’s an all-time classic title that deserves to be reborn for a new generation of gamers, and now is arguably the perfect time to do it because of all the remakes that have been happening.
Heck, the remake of Yuji Horii’s franchise that happened last year was so successful that many want more remakes along those lines because of how quality it was, so why not with this title? Plus, Square Enix needs a few more hits right now after all the “L’s” they’ve been taking in recent years, so this could help save them in some respects.
But more importantly than all of that, this game represents the greatness that can happen when creators like Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama, and others come together to make something so special that nothing can truly top it. When this game was released on the SNES, it was a revelation. It was a title that helped prove how wonderful console RPGs can be, and since then, we’ve only gotten a somewhat decent sequel and a bunch of ports! A remake is long overdue.
