The Pokemon Company may have played things a bit too “safely” regarding the latest Pokemon Presents, but there was one rather shocking announcement, and that was the new title called Pokemon Champions. It was announced by showing off a teaser trailer featuring trainers going through the cycles of Nintendo consoles that led up to now while also playing games on their phones before things “escalate” to a full-on Pokemon battle in a stadium. Afterward, one of the company heads noted that this would be a very interconnected title that would focus on “core Pokemon battles” that could be found in the mainline games.
The point is to compete with trainers from all over the world to see who is the best. In the mainline games, to do such battles, you had to either go to a Pokemon Center or use certain features available to you to link up and find others who were up for a battle. Here, it appears that the game will have a more streamlined approach to matters so that battles can be had more easily and more frequently. Another key feature is that the game is coming from the “Switch family of systems,” which likely implies it’ll come out on the Nintendo Switch 2 and will be available on mobile devices.
That proves that The Pokemon Company is truly trying to allow as many players as possible into the title while also ensuring you can play the game on the go. There are other features to talk about, though. For example, there will be Pokemon available within the game itself for you to choose from, and you can even use Mega Evolution and Terastal transformations with your Pokemon. However, if you have certain favorites from past games in your Pokemon Home account, you’ll be able to bring those titles into the game as well. Plus, you can trade with Gen 9 and likely a certain other upcoming title to get even more Pokemon to access.
Currently, Pokemon Champions has no release window, and The Pokemon Company asked us to “wait for further announcements.” That being said, it is an interesting concept to focus on. It’s not unlike certain games that were shown in the trailer, where it was pretty much all about the battles and picking Pokemon to go up against your friends. If this experience is as smooth as the company likely hopes it will be, it could be another hit adventure for fans to play for a long time.
