There’s plenty of buzz within the gaming space right now, as there are many who hope to “see the future” with what Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have in store for gamers. Microsoft had a mini-Developer Direct last month that teased a few games for the Xbox Series X/S, but only one of them was exclusive. As for Nintendo, there are MANY rumors about a Direct happening this month, but nothing has come from it at this point. As for Sony, things are heating up with them, as they’ve announced a State of Play event, and it’s happening tomorrow! Doesn’t that sound familiar…
The announcement was made via social media and the PlayStation Blog, where Sony noted:
“State of Play is back tomorrow, February 12! Tune in live for news and updates on great games coming to PS5. The show celebrates a creative and unique selection of exciting games from studios around the world. The 40+ minute show begins February 12 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET | 11pm CET / February 13 at 7am JST on YouTube and Twitch, and will be broadcast in English and Japanese. See you tomorrow!”
The fact that the presentation is 40+ minutes long is a great thing for PlayStation gamers. Why? Simply put, 2024 wasn’t exactly the best year in the PS5’s life. Yes, it may have gotten the “Game of the Year” for certain shows, but it wasn’t exactly the year’s best-selling game. Plus, even when the PS5 got an exclusive title from a third-party company, it didn’t always sell well either. On top of all of that, Sony was more focused on selling hardware via its PS5 Pro than it was on having meaningful games that gamers would want to play on it.
Oh, and notice how we didn’t even mention the live-service disasters that plagued Sony throughout the year? So, yeah, when you add that all up, 2024 wasn’t the best year for the PlayStation or for Sony. That brings us all the way back to the State of Play because gamers need a reason to believe that this year will be different. The good news is that between multiplatform and exclusive titles, things will at least have the potential to be different.
We know there are some big-name games coming out later this year and that the PlayStation will be the “dominant place to play them.” Yet, there needs to be more than that. Will there be new exclusives announced? You’ll have to watch it tomorrow to find out!
