Sadly, it’s becoming a “tale as old as time” that key video games from popular franchises will get announced at some point or another and then vanish from the public eye for years, never to be heard about or spoken of until either the developers are ready to reveal something, or because it’s announced they had to “restart development” and they didn’t want fans to think the game was canceled. In truth, it gets more annoying with each game this happens to, and that makes many wonder about games like Dragon Quest XII, as gamers wonder if this is in one of the “bad categories” of development.
To that end, a small update has been found. As noted by Insider Stealth, franchise creator Yuji Horii commented on the state of Dragon Quest XII, and he did have some slightly positive news about it:
Obviously, that’s not the most reassuring thing ever. After all, we would assume that they’re working on it “little by little,” but when you add that to various reports about the state of the game or how the entire team behind it might have been swapped, it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. However, we should be patient and let things play out before dropping the hammer on the team and declaring the game a bust.
Now, as for the other statements that Stealth made, it’s not only reasonable to think that Dragon Quest XII will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2, but one could make the argument that it should be expected. Why is that? First, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be a more powerful system than the OG Switch. Thus, it’ll be able to handle “more modern” games. Thus, Square Enix would likely be willing to put this upcoming title on it, not unlike how there are rumors that its other RPG series will bring the “Remake Saga” to the platform.
The other thing to note here is the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. When that game was released on the OG Switch, it basically sold a million copies on its own in Japan, and that was only counting the physical copies! When you add in the digital copies, it’s clear that people in Japan love the Switch and wanted to play this classic title on it. So, if the Switch 2 has similar success early on, Square Enix will want to capitalize on that momentum and popularity by ensuring that the Switch 2 has the latest entry to maximize sales.
Hopefully, we’ll get more insights into the game soon.
