Bungie has made a huge announcement in their reveal for Destiny 2: Heresy.
Heresy is the latest in Bungie’s new content strategy for Destiny 2, smaller expansions that they can iterate and release more quickly. This time, you return to the Dreadnaught, the dreaded Hive ship that’s now been drifting unmoored for years, like a ghost ship.
As they revealed in PlayStation Blog, the Guardians reenter the Dreadnaught to fight in a new activity Bungie has dubbed The Nether. It seems you will be fighting the ship’s corruption by the Taken, and it’s certainly described like Heresy could be designed to be a roguelike mode, like Destiny needed that.
Those Bungie loyal will get a chance to judge for themselves if it was worth coming back to the Dreadnaught when Destiny 2: Heresy launches in February 4. However, in the meantime, Bungie also has another groundbreaking announcement alongside it.
They have confirmed rumors of a collaboration with Star Wars. As described in PCGamesN, there will be new armor sets that allow you to play as either a Stormtrooper, a Death Trooper, or a Royal Guard. It seems to have been a matter of convenience that Bungie and LucasArts stuck with fully armored and helmeted characters to keep in line with how Destiny’s Guardians appear. But this also means that if you decided to join in, you’ll be on the side of the Empire with no other choices.
As these collaborations come and go, this is relatively tame and a far cry from what Epic Games has done to Fortnite, and also, what Activision has done in response to Call of Duty in response to Fortnite. We do wonder as well if Sony had made arrangements with Disney for this collaboration relatively recently, or if they were brewing for a while.
In any case, we have to disagree with PCGamesN writer Jamie Hore’s opinion that this could water down Destiny 2. When you consider where Destiny 2 is right now, they don’t really have a lot to hold too precious or protect. If Bungie’s marquee title gets hit with the crossover bug, and that leads to returning and new players, that would actually be great for Destiny and for Bungie.
But now that we’ve defended this move, we of course also have to agree that this idea is guaranteed to be a success. So we’ll see if Bungie’s little experiment will be a success, and if we could be playing as Guardians cosplaying the Helghast or Super Earth Armed Forces in the Future.
