Resident Evil 4 Remake Hits A New Milestone For Capcom

January 6, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Fans are really enjoying this survival horror franchise.

Capcom has been delivering remakes for the Resident Evil franchise. It’s been a solid move on their part, as it’s clear fans are enjoying the chance to replay these iconic installments. Likewise, some players are finally diving into these games for the first time rather than going back to the dated original releases. But today, we’re finding out that Resident Evil 4 has hit a new milestone. The remake managed to become the fastest-selling installment in the entire franchise history.

Resident Evil 4 sold over nine million copies as of December 19, 2024, according to Alex Aniel, a business development manager in the video game industry, on X. Alex revealed that this tops the previous mainline installment release, Resident Evil Village, alongside the other remakes from Capcom. That’s quite a feat, but we can understand why.

For starters, Resident Evil 4’s remake was a solid game. It had great reviews from critics and fans alike. Likewise, the original Resident Evil 4 was one of the most cherished installments in the entire franchise. As a result, when this remake was finally announced, it generated enough hype that it might have persuaded players who were not franchise fans to see what all the excitement was about. Of course, now we’re back to waiting.

RE4 is by far the fastest selling RE in history. It's not a competition at all.

Previous RE games sold in their 8th quarter (LTD in parenthesis):

RE4: 1m+ (9m+)
Village: 500k (7.9m)
RE7: 400k (6.1m)
RE3: 300k (5.2m)
RE2: 300k (7.8m)
RE6: 100k (5.9m) https://t.co/slE4DwMycO

Capcom has yet to confirm what game is next on the horizon officially. We might get the next major installment to see where the story progresses after the previous Resident Evil Village game. Of course, plenty of other installments could receive a remake treatment. Fans have expressed to the developers that they wouldn’t mind seeing a remake of Resident Evil Code Veronica or Resident Evil Zero. Meanwhile, if Capcom continues with the mainline trend, it might opt to remake Resident Evil 5 next. At any rate, we don’t have any official details.

Regardless, if you haven’t already done so, Resident Evil 4 is available today on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. You can also view our Before You Buy coverage of the game in the video we have embedded below.
