Another game is rumored to be arriving to the Switch 2.
As reported by Video Games Chronicle, YouTuber Doctre81 found that Gotham Knights has been newly listed on a developer’s resume on two unknown platforms. The speculation is one of the platforms is the original Switch, and the second platform could be the Switch 2.
Gotham Knights received ratings from ESRB and Korea’s rating agency for the Nintendo Switch in September 2023, but the game was never officially confirmed, announced, or for that matter, cancelled for the platform.
Gotham Knights also released to poor critical reception and low sales. The game launched with multiple technical issues, but WB Games Montreal was also criticized for not creating a better polished product overall. Another point of disappointment revolved around the game having less DC villains and overall story than expected, being stuck at 30 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions being cancelled.
If it feels like this was all already forgotten, it would be because WB Games ended up with an even bigger disappointment with Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. But last December, Warner Bros. laid off 99 staff at WB Games Montreal, indicating that the game’s performance still came with consequences for the studio.
As speculated, it is entirely possible that WB Games Montreal submitted a Switch port for rating to the US and in Korea, but later decided to move the port to the Switch 2 instead. With all of that said, we should also consider other possibilities for these unnamed ports.
For example, WB Games Montreal could be doing a Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge. Which is to say, they could be making the entire game over from the ground up in an attempt to address the original game’s shortcomings.
And that comparison to Team Ninja’s title may be apt. Even though there are fans of Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, and the newer version received improved review scores, Team Ninja was not able to do enough to really redeem the title in the same way that Cyberpunk: 2077 and No Man’s Sky had real comeback narratives.
On the other hand, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge released months after the original title, while Cyberpunk: 2077 and No Man’s Sky had to be worked on consistently for years to earn those comebacks. As unlikely as it seems, if Warner Bros. is willing to put up the money to fix Gotham Knights in the long term, all the way to improving its game design, maybe WB Games Montreal could actually pull it off.
This rumored port raises other questions, as there are more online games that do poorly on the Switch than there are games that are popular. Will WB Games Montreal also add enough to entice Nintendo gamers who may be more inclined to load up Splatoon or Fortnite? We’ll see if all of this ever actually comes to pass.
