It's a secret to everyone that Blizzard has been developing an unnannounced title—and successor to World of Warcraft for a few years now.
While Blizzard has yet to announced what the game is, Develop Online reports that the developer is experimenting with various monetization models for the game, and that it will essentially be free-to-play based on word from an inside source.
The so-called "Project Titan" is expected to be announced sometime after the launch of Diablo III this year. A source connected to the reliable publication named the game said that the studio was mainly focused on rolling Diablo III out, although it had the capacity to work on multiple projects.
The move can be seen as a move away from Blizzard's current subscription-based model with World of Warcraft, and the company will have to make up for the deficit of its monthly fees by implementing added-value items or some sort of economy akin to Diablo III's global auction house or Team Fortress 2's item store to make up for the shortfall.
"It certainly is possible, if we find ourselves in that circumstance, or if we come up with a game where we think that’s the right business model, the most appropriate for players to experience it," Blizzard COO Paul Sams said last year.
"We don’t have any opposition to the concept, it’s just that at this point we haven’t decided to make a game where that is the model. But that doesn’t mean that we won’t."
