One Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Mystery Remains Unsolved

December 19, 2024 by Todd Black

What do they mean…?

The release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet on the Nintendo Switch was both a moment of pure joy and intense frustration for fans. On the one hand, Gen 9 finally gave players what they wanted: a truly open-world title to go and catch Pokemon in. The experience was truly unique compared to other mainline titles, and many were hoping that the rest of the journey would be just as good. However, even with the two-part DLC that helped expand the game world and story, the technical issues and bugs were hard not to notice, and sometimes they were ludicrous in their obviousness. As in, how could Game Freak and The Pokemon Company keep them in when they were literally disrupting key moments of gameplay?

It’s been a couple of years since launch, and fans are still talking about all the ins and outs of the game and its content. On Reddit, the topic shifted to one of a mystery that is still unsolved. Near the end of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and in parts of the DLC, you have to head to Area Zero, a unique place where time doesn’t play by the rules, and Pokemon from the past and future are around for you to capture.

Yet, within Area Zero is a set of symbols that many gamers expected to have explained at some point…but they never were. The DLC nor the main story touched on it, and that has many Redditors wondering what they are for:

So did we just forget about this? Both DLCs are over and we still don't know what it means.

While some made references to certain series jokes, others put forth a key suggestion that could play out to be true. Specifically, they noted that The Pokemon Company, especially recently, isn’t above putting clues or teases for its next games in the current ones it’s developing. When the team did the Gen 4 remake, there was a tease of a Pokemon that wouldn’t appear until the spinoff with Arceus was released.

Thus, it’s possible that this clue ties into Pokemon Legends Z-A somehow. The question is how. We don’t know and for a very basic reason. It’s already been almost a year since the reveal trailer for the spinoff title, and outside of the massive leak of The Pokemon Company’s servers, we have no true information about it. We do know that the game will be set entirely in Lumiose City and that Mega Evolution will be featured heavily in it, so perhaps the symbols are a clue toward something that happens in that game’s plot. We’ll have to wait until 2025 to find out.
