Rebirth Island Has Been Pulled From Call Of Duty Warzone After Black Ops 6 Integration, For “Map-Specific Issues”

November 19, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

Makarov might be a little too successful in ruining, I mean, running the place.

Call of Duty: Warzone just lost a map.

The official Call of Duty Updates Twitter account shared this recent update specific to the game:

“We’ve removed Rebirth Island from the playlist while we investigate map-specific issues. Other maps and modes remain unaffected.

We will post updates here when we have more to share.”

If you want to wallow in the schadenfreude of watching Call of Duty players reveal how buggy the map is, you can see all of that here. But we’ll try to figure out why this is important to the players. As it turns out, this is about more than just getting to talk trash the developers.

Rebirth Island, of course, is the English translation for its original Russian name, Vozrozhdeniya. This is a real island in the Aral Sea, where the Soviet Union once held bioweapon experiments. We won’t go in detail on the unsavory real history of this location, but it went through decontamination in 2002.

Rebirth Island was introduced in the Call of Duty universe in the original Call of Duty: Black Ops. In the iconic mission called Rebirth, a brainwashed Alex Mason is goaded on by the spectre of Viktor Reznov to kill Dr. Friedrich Steiner. The significance of the events in this mission, and its dramatic plot twist, made it one of the franchise’s most memorable moments, with a memorable location.

Of course, gameplay wise, Rebirth Island proved to be hugely popular with players as well. So much so that when dataming revealed that there was a picture of the island in the next update, it actually led to the fans getting excited for it.

And true enough, Activision confirmed that Rebirth Island was coming back in Call of Duty: Warzone last April 3, in Season 3 of  Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. In this incarnation, Vladimir Makarov and the Konni Group had taken over. This storyline explanation allowed Raven Software to redesign the map, with newly build buildings taking over the abandoned facility.

While the official update did not drop any hints on this, there is a correlation with this happening shortly after Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 integrated with Call of Duty: Warzone last November 14. Players want to have that integration of course, among other things Activision promised that you will be able to create Global Weapon Builds in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Ranked Play.

Ranked Play is coming this Thursday, November 21, 2024, and those Global Weapon Builds will be usable across Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Multiplayer and Zombies modes, as well as Call of Duty: Warzone. So at least, Activision can avert making this situation worse, if Rebirth Island had been part of the game when Ranked Play launched.

Hopefully, Raven Software can get everything working in short order. It’s certainly a complicated task to get this working across two distinct games, across five platforms. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is now the standard for the franchise, so it’s on Activision to live up to that accomplishment.
