Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Dev Reveals Scrapped Feature Decades After Launch

October 28, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

We almost had a very different map.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was a hit release from Rockstar Games. Coming off their success with Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, players were getting a new change of scenery. We don’t have to tell you much about this game now. After all, it just celebrated its twentieth anniversary. However, a former developer reveals a scrapped feature decades after its launch.

The developers at Rockstar North likely had a few ideas for this game that didn’t come to fruition. Developers are often working against what is capable of using actual console hardware. However, that wasn’t the case when it came to this scrapped feature. Former Rockstar Games developer Obbe Vermeij revealed that they were once planning to break the game setting up into three different maps.

Taking to X, Obbe unveiled that while the memory was very right on the PlayStation 2, they were able to pull off three cities. Essentially, players within the game would have to use different modes of transportation to reach these areas. Those include trains and planes. However, each map would have distinct police, ambulances, fire trucks, pickups, and even weather types, so it wouldn’t feel like a copy-and-paste between each city location.

20 years ago we released Grand Theft Auto – San Andreas.

The original plan was for the 3 cities to be on separate maps. The player would travel between the cities using trains and planes.
(Gta 1 and 2 also had three cities on separate maps)

We don’t know why this pathway wasn’t taken. Instead, Obbe only noted that before work started on the three maps, Rockstar North had a meeting, and it was decided to focus on one large map. It’s an interesting little tidbit of information for such a classic game installment.

Right now, most fans from Rockstar Games are eager for the studio to bring out new information on its next installment to the GTA franchise. We know that Grand Theft Auto VI is in the works for a release sometime in 2025. But we haven’t seen any new marketing materials released since its initial announcement trailer.
