Mortal Kombat 1 Highlights Johnny Cages Animality

September 23, 2024 by Todd Black

Does anyone else hear dramatic music?

As gruesome as it might sound, when it comes to games like Mortal Kombat 1, you will find people who decided to rank not only the characters and how good they are in a fight but how cool they are when they perform their finishing moves. When it comes to “Fatalities,” the more gruesome the death is, the more the fanbase likes it. After all, those have been a part of the game since its literal start, and it’s part of the reason it got both its fame and its notoriety. With Animalities, though, it’s a bit different, as they want the “cool” factor just as much as the “epic death” factor.

In the upcoming “Khaos Reigns” expansion, Mortal Kombat 1 won’t just give players three new Kombatants to have fun with via Sektor, Cyrax, and Noob Saibot, but they’ll bring back the Animalities that once helped define a key era of the franchise. They’ve slowly been showcasing them and highlighting how each character will have a very different animal to be, and how that death will be quite brutal. Today, the Animality for Johnny Cage dropped, and it’s perfect for a “man of his talents.”

As you’ll see in the trailer below, Johnny goes into a “costume change” while on a “set” and then literally goes Jaws on his foe. Yep, they recreate the iconic movie poster, only for Johnny to snatch up his foe and then bite them in half, and then follow up on them just as the announcer proclaims his victory:

So, why is this so cool? First, it perfectly fits Johnny Cage’s character. After all, the man’s a “visionary actor” who is too good at his roles; that’s literally canon. So, he would get a kick out of doing something like this simply because he would get to relive “movie history” in his own way. Plus, he gets to be Jaws. Who wouldn’t want to be the shark instead of one of its victims? Exactly.

What it also shows is that NetherRealm Studios is having a blast with these Animalities and is trying to come up with clever and unique deaths so that they don’t seem like an afterthought compared to the main Fatalities. There was quite a stir the other day when Reptile was revealed to transform into a Venus Fly Trap for his Animality, as that’s not quite the “animal” that many people expected from him.

Regardless, the Animality update will be free upon the expansion’s release.
