We’ve shared information with you about Gears of War: E-Day’s technical bona fides, and its bent into horror. In a new interview, The Coalition has revealed to us how this game might just tug at our heartstrings.
When the trailer came out, everyone got really excited, and not necessarily because we saw Marcus Fenix. Fenix also appeared in the newer games in the latest narrative timeline from The Coalition. While he may have been older, and was no longer the main focus, Marcus certainly served to anchor these newer games in the same world that the originals were in.
As reported by MP1st, The Coalition has clarified that Gears of War: E-Day will be a linear experience.
Creative Director Matt Searcy said:
“We make linear stories for a reason. It’s about taking an authored story and involving you with those characters and driving through it with gameplay. It’ll be linear..”
But the actual story sounds like it will be as emotional as the passionate Gears of War fans felt when they first saw Dom appear in the trailer.
As explained by MP1st, the story will actually be about the start of Marcus and Dom’s brotherhood, and this is where we get into the lore of the franchise.
Marcus and Dom, before becoming the closest of war buddies, were connected by a common friend: Dom’s older brother Carlos Santiago. Marcus and Carlos grew up together as classmates, and were childhood friends, years before E-Day.
Marcus’s dad, Adam Fenix, was a famous scientist, and he seemed vulnerable to bullying precisely because he could have been a nepo baby. In a weird way, Carlos decided to bond with Marcus to protect him from the kids who would have gone after him for that reason.
At the same time, Carlos was also loved by his brother Dominick, and really, his family and everyone who knew him. Carlos stayed close to Dom even after Dom had gotten married and had children.
When Carlos enlisted as a soldier, both Marcus and Dom followed in his footsteps. And Marcus went out of his way to enlist as a common solider, to stay close with Dom, even if he could have used his pull to be an officer.
Carlos dies in the Pendulum Wars, leading Marcus to become distant towards other people. Marcus never tells Dom what really happened to Carlos, but Emergence Day changes everything for both of them, and the two end up coming tother.
This backstory was actually explored in the comic books, not the games, but now The Coalition has seen the potential of telling this particular chapter, we may get a better idea of what Marcus and Dom go through, as friends and sworn brothers, before the end that we know is on the horizon.
