Tekken x Street Fighter is not currently in active development, Bandai Namco has confirmed.
In an interview with GameSpot, Tekken game director Katsuhiro Harada suggested that releasing the crossover fighting game now would fracture both the Tekken and the Street Fighter communities.
“When we develop fighting games, we try to keep the core community in mind as well as the wider audience that wants to play these games,” Harada said. “But currently the situation is with fighting games, you have Street Fighter V that just released–a lot of people are playing that fervently–and there’s a large crowd out there waiting or Tekken 7.”
He added: “We don’t want to split these communities, so a good window in which to release Tekken x Street Fighter is something that’s become difficult recently. So it’s on hold for the moment.”
The Tekken x Street Fighter partnership between Bandai Namco and Capcom has originally announced six years ago during San Diego Comic-Con in 2010. Capcom’s end of the agreement, Street Figher x Tekken, launched in 2012.
Little has been shown of Tekken X Street Fighter in the intervening years but Harada has previously stated that development was ongoing. As late as last July, he was still providing updates on the game. This is the first time he’s admitted that the game is no longer being actively worked on at Bandai Namco.
The company’s Pokémon fighting game Pokken Tournament was recently released following a collaboration with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo. Bandai Namco’s next major fighting game is Tekken 7, which is in development for PlayStation 4.
