Saber Interactive has scrubbed all mentions of Embracer Group on their website.
As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Saber’s website used to indicate that they were owned by Embracer on its company description, and Saber’s logo even used to have Embracer’s logo under it. Both have been removed from the website. We will note that Saber’s Twitter account still refers to Embracer under its profile.
This change happens as rumors have been swirling that Saber, like Gearbox Software, is slated to be sold by Embracer Group. This sale of two game studios is part of the many adjustments Embracer is making to stay viable as a company. Embracer had been ramping up and buying as many studios and game companies as possible, in anticipation of a huge money buyout. But, as Embracer revealed, that buyout plan fell through, and as a result, they were in the hole for a large amount of money.
While Embracer does deserve jeers for closing some of their newly acquired studios, and firing many of their employees, we really don’t want Embracer Group to fail at this time. What that would actually lead to is for those dozens of game studios and companies, with potentially thousands of employees, to all get fired, and their projects and studios shut down.
These rumors that Saber and Gearbox would be going on sale are an optimistic note in this ongoing news story. Saber Interactive in particular, has proven to be consistent in releasing their titles, and being at least modestly successful with their releases, especially compared to their peers.
To put things in context, Saber had one game release this year already, and have two more titles supposedly planned for release this year. They have seven other ongoing projects that have yet to receive release dates.
One of those upcoming 2024 titles is the highly anticipated Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, teased by the company since two years ago. And one of their projects still in development with no release date in sight is the notorious remake of Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic. That game was originally to be produced by Aspyr Media for Sony, but the rumor mill was abuzz with word that Sony pulled funding after Aspyr made a poor showing of their remake in progress.
So Saber has a lot going for themselves, and that makes them attractive to any potential buyers. Whoever would be buying Saber would definitely be getting them for a pittance from Embracer at this time. If these changes on the website means that Saber has been bought out from Embracer, we may be receiving an update on the company, and their games, very very soon.
