Marvel-Approved List Of Characters For Sony’s X-Men Games Leaked

January 11, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

There’s at least one mutant who’s likely begging to be added in.

The list of characters Sony is allowed to use for their upcoming X-Men video games has been leaked.

Of course, as you should know by now, this information is one of many details that has gone public as a result of the Insomniac ransomware hack. Much of this information is now public and widely known, but if you still would prefer not to get this information you can stop reading here.

We will share the whole list below, as dropped online by Twitter user zvis_ceral. But we’ll describe what we saw after perusing the list.

First things first, Marvel has separated the list into three; one is for X-Men Family Restricted Characters,  one for X-Men Unrestricted Characters, and one for Additional Marvel Characters.

While the list refers to each entry as characters, some of the items refer to ideas, such as factions, locations, items, and even a comic book storyline or two. Some characters have names shared by others, often for convoluted storyline reasons. For the sake of brevity, we’ve cut down each entry to a name that you can easily search on your own.

The X-Men Unrestricted Characters list is easy to figure out, as it’s the characters from X-Men comics that have already been used for other properties. Think everyone who showed up in Deadpool’s movies. We’ll get back to this in a minute.

The Additional Marvel Characters refer to an even smaller list, of characters who have appeared in X-Men comics, but are not considered X-Men characters. It will likely disappoint readers that not only are the likes of Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy not on this list, but neither is Spider-Man, any of the Spider-Men.

The X-Men Family Restricted Characters is the biggest list, and may have as definitive a list of X-Men characters as is possible. It includes pretty much every well-known member, ally, and enemy, and a lot of deep cut characters, that you may remember from earlier movies, cartoons, and even games.

Now, remember when I brought up Deadpool? He isn’t on this list, at all. It’s an interesting omission, since his longtime partner Domino is in here, in the unrestricted list no doubt for being in the latest Deadpool movie.

And then there’s the curious case of Psylocke. There are separate entries for Psylocke and Kwannon. Without getting lost in the details, this seems to imply that Marvel can use the version of Psylocke which is Kwannon reclaiming her physical body, and the version of Psylocke we grew up with, which is Elizabeth Braddock’s soul inhabiting Kwannon’s body. Elizabeth Braddock, and her current identity, as Captain Britain, are not on the list.

We could go on and on, but it’s obvious that Sony, and their specific assigned studio Insomniac, has more than enough leeway to make compelling storylines for these X-Men video games. And of course, no one is stopping them from making new versions of old characters like they did with their Marvel’s Spider-Man games.

One final point: this list was dated on July 26, 2021. Marvel will have likely updated this list, and possibly replaced some of the names found on here.
