When it comes to video game adaptations, we’ve seemed to have “turned the corner” with them. By that, we mean that several recent adaptations of video game properties in the animated and live-action sense have done well on TV and in theaters. One of the more surprising ones by far was Twisted Metal on Peacock. The insane car thriller shocked many with its clever use of characters, car battles, and surprisingly deep plot. And as star Anthony Mackie revealed at The Game Awards, during his weird on-stage bit where he yelled at a lot of the audience, Season 2 has been greenlit.
But while that is exciting, what will fans be able to expect when the second season drops? Well, in a chat with NBC, showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith noted that fans can expect to see much more with these characters and that the infamous tournament from the game beckons:
“I’m excited for fans to see these characters come to life and see what makes them funny and what makes them heartbroken. I think it’s gonna be fun to dive into these people … We introduced a lot of these characters — Preacher, Bloody Mary, John, Quiet, Watts — it’s gonna be fun to put them all in a [single] place at the tournament and have them interact. I’m excited about seeing how does Preacher react to Bloody Mary? How does Grimm react to Sweet Tooth?’ There’s a lot of really fun, interconenctive character headspace stuff that I’m really excited to dive into. It feels like a new toy box. On Cobra Kai, there were very much tournament seasons and consequence seasons, and this is very much a tournament season. I want everything to feel like it’s tied to the tournament, even if we aren’t in the tournament yet. I am hopeful that it will surprise and delight those people who saw the finale of Episode 10 and was like, ‘I want to see more of that in a tournament setting.’ My goal is to capture that.”
He also noted that he loves “worldbuilding” and wants to see all the stories that could happen in Twisted Metal. One of the requests by fans of the first season was that there was more action with both the characters and the cars. If the tournament arrives, then that will be what happens, and things will go into a new gear when the season releases.
At present, no release window for season 2 has been announced.
