Sega’s plans for Sonic in 2024 seem to have leaked early.
As shared on reddit, a Powerpoint presentation that Sega may have been using internally leaked, and now we know their plans for most of the year. This includes video games and other media. We’ll go through each item.
First things first is the Knuckles TV show. Knuckles was introduced to the non-video game playing audience in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie. We already know quite a bit about this project, which is coming to Paramount +.
Idris Elba is reprising his role as Knuckles the Echidna, alongside Wade, as played by Adam Pally. In the events of the prior movie, Wade was acting sherriff at Green Hills, and Knuckles spent most of the movie fighting Sonic until Robotnik betrays him for the Master Emerald, just like in the video game.
Expanding that storyline, Knuckles has now been converted to an ally of Sonic’s and will spend this series training him to be an Echidna Warrior. The only thing that has changed is the original release date of late 2023 has been moved to the 1st quarter of 2024.
Mentioned next is Sonic Prime, the Netflix animated show with an original storyline separate from the movies and video games. Sonic Prime is created by Man of Action Studios, who had made their name on the Ben 10 franchise.
Sonic Prime has already had two seasons totaling 16 episodes. Wildbrain Entertainment, one of the production companies involved in Sonic Prime, has already revealed the show will have 24 episodes in total, making this upcoming 3rd season the last one. Sonic Prime will also be arriving at the 1st quarter of 2024.
Up next is a mobile game for Spring 2024. We have no other details on this one, but Sega has sought to make their original Sonic mobile games action oriented, so we can expect this to be the same.
There is also a mention of Sonic SuperStars DLC, but with no dates or numbers attached to it. Again, there isn’t much to say here, but it is interesting Sega has this planned this far in advance.
The presentation includes a prologue for a new game. We can’t access the presentation now, but it was either a comic or an animated short. Separately, there is a mention of a new game, coming Holiday 2024.
We aren’t sure here if this confirms the existence of one or two new Sonic games, but Sega would have certainly been working on these games for years before revealing them here, if they were releasing next year.
Finally, we get a confirmation that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is coming in December 2024. There is no question that this is referring to the 3rd movie in the franchise that includes Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik. These movies have been commercially successful thus farm, regardless of their critical reception. Unfortunately, this film is one of many affected by this year’s SAG-AFTRA strike, and potentially the WGA strike.
It probably stands to reason that these strikes have caused potential delays to Sega’s movie and show projects for Sonic. We should note that the WGA strike has ended, but the SAG-AFTRA strike has not, and that could lead to further delays for some or all of these projects down the road. But then, we have new Sonic games to look forward to as well.
