Remedy Entertainment Says Xbox Series S GPU Has Been An Issue

October 6, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Developers have to work around the Xbox Series S.

The latest-generation console platforms are bringing some exciting new video game releases. With the latest hardware comes more opportunities for developers. We’re getting bigger and better video games, but one system stands out a bit. That’s the Xbox Series S, as it’s not as powerful as the Xbox Series X or the PlayStation 5. According to Remedy Entertainment, the Xbox Series S GPU is the real problem developers face. As a result, they are working around the GPU to ensure the game is able to deliver an experience that appeals to the development team.

Thanks to True Achievements, we’re finding out about a recent interview IGN had with Remedy Entertainment communications director Thomas Puha. During their conversation, the topic of the Xbox Series S came up. According to Thomas, who said that he had to choose his words very carefully, the GPU is the problem. With the CPU being pretty much the same, the only downfall developers are having is the GPU. Add in the fact that there’s also less memory, making developing games for the console challenging.

Thomas noted that developers have to carefully work around resolution and frame rate to ensure that the game can run on the Xbox Series S without taking too much of a hit. He went on to say that it’s similar to a PC that’s weaker or running older hardware compared to today’s standards. If you’re on a weaker PC, you will expect the game not to look as good or have a lower framerate. That’s the mindset you might need with the Xbox Series S, which is also significantly cheaper than the Xbox Series X platform.

You can view the full interview here from IGN. Meanwhile, some fans might wonder if there is any push to see a mid-gen refresh for the Xbox Series S console. We have seen leaks in the past of Microsoft thinking of a mid-gen refresh, but those plans could have easily been swapped around at this point. At any rate, the Xbox Series S is still a heavily pushed console from Microsoft and a great entry point for the platform. Pair up the Xbox Series S with Xbox Game Pass, and you have a next-gen console with access to countless video games along with Microsoft’s first-party exclusives.

Currently, Remedy Entertainment is getting ready to release its next big game into the marketplace. Alan Wake 2 is set to launch on October 27, 2023. You’ll find the game available for the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms when it is released. However, it does sound like you might get the best experience for this game if you’re playing with the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or a capable gaming PC.
