I like to think of FEZ as the Half Life 2: Episode 3 of indie platformers. We all know it'll be an amazing game that justifies the lengthy wait, we're just not certain we'll get to play it before we die of old age. Still, my cynicism has taken another blow with the announcement that the game has finally been rated for release by the ESRB.
Developer Polytron broke the news with a jubilant tweet, but they've yet to announce any firm release date beyond "early 2012". After more than two years of delays, I wouldn't be surprised if their definition of "early" includes 11:59 PM on December 31.
Still, this is an important milestone. The European ratings authority, PEGI, evaluated the title back in December. With two major classifications out of the way, there's a good chance we're creeping towards a final release, though Joystiq is quick to point out that we've heard nothing from the Australian ratings board.
