Sonic the Hedgehog fans have a new game to keep track of. Sonic Superstars has already been unveiled, and it’s taking fans back to the classic age of the franchise. Here we are getting a traditional side-scrolling Sonic game that you might be familiar with from the earlier Sega Genesis days. We know that this game is centered around a new chain of islands that Doctor Robotnik has taken control of. Just as before, Sonic must venture through the islands and collect the Chaos Emeralds.
As mentioned, this is a classic style of Sonic games that will be different from the more modern 3D installments. It looks like the initial push was to see this installment continue with the developers that delivered 2017’s Sonic Mania, but that ultimately didn’t work out. Instead, we know that the development team from Arzest will bring out this game installment. We will get a familiar side-scrolling experience but with some new innovative gameplay mechanics.
During today’s Gamescom ONL event, we got another look into this upcoming Sonic game. Fans were given a look into some of the gameplay footage and local cooperative multiplayer. It’s worth mentioning that an online battle mode is also available. But this is our first look at the game since we saw it announced during the big Summer Game Fest event. Additionally, this game finally has a release date that we can attach to the game. So if you’re after a new side-scrolling Sonic the Hedgehog experience, you can expect this title to land in the marketplace on October 17, 2023. October will be filled with some incredible games, so why not add another title into the mix?
Meanwhile, this event also gave fans a small look into what’s coming for Sonic Frontiers, the previous big mainline release for the Sonic franchise. If you still have your copy of the game, then a new free update is coming. This is said to be the final update, and it will deliver some additional content into the game. You’ll get a new storyline and additional characters to play as, along with new challenges. So there is plenty of Sonic content to enjoy for the remainder of this year. With that said, if you missed out on Gamescom ONL, then you’re in luck. The latest trailer highlighting the multiplayer component for Sonic Superstars can be viewed in the video below.
