Is A Final Fantasy 6 Remake On The Way?

June 20, 2023 by Todd Black

You guys really like that clown, don’t you?

We live in an age of video games where it’s not simply enough to get new games from familiar franchises or new dives into new worlds. We want to enjoy what we did long ago in a new light. By that, we mean how many companies pride themselves on doing remasters or remakes of classic titles to bank on nostalgia and get older gamers to try the games once again. At times, this can be a brilliant thing, especially when they do a full-on remake and overhaul everything the game was before to make it fresh and new. For RPG fans, one remake they want to see is Final Fantasy 6.

To the uninitiated, that might sound like an odd choice, especially since the following game was the one everyone ties to Square Enix’s legendary franchise, and that one has a multi-part remake underway. But many people forget that while the 7th game was legendary for elevating the franchise and 3D gaming to a whole new level, Final Fantasy 6 was beloved when it was released for its story, gameplay, and more. It also has one of the best gaming villains via the clown-turned-god in Kefka.

The game was so beloved that it’d been ported many times to other systems, including the pixel remaster that came out this year.

But for many fans, and apparently some of the staff of Square Enix, they go to producer Yoshinori Kitase and ask about whether they can do a remake of that title. During a roundtable, Kitase admitted that it would be difficult to make this happen:

“Final Fantasy 7 Remake is not yet finished, so I am not able to think about it. But there are many Final Fantasy 6 fans inside the company, and they often ask me ‘when are we making 6?’. I think FF6 Remake would be difficult.”

But why would it be difficult? Well, it was the last of the 2D titles in the line to use pixel graphics. They built that world around those graphics. So if they were to do a full-on remake, they’d have to put things into the 3D space and use 3D models for everything. That would mean overhauling things like the battle system, the world and what you could do in it, and more.

That’s not to say that this remake can’t happen, but it’s one you shouldn’t expect to be done soon. But then again, Square Enix has surprised us in the past.
