Cyberpunk 2077 might not have had a successful launch into the marketplace. It was a buggy mess when it hit the digital and physical retail shelves. That prompted a ton of backlash from fans, ultimately resulting in CD Projekt Red had to entirely focus on getting this game up to standards. Unfortunately, that also came at the cost of several projects likely planned as DLC for this game. So we’re left with just one single DLC expansion.
But that doesn’t mean the developers at CD Projekt Red are scrapping this IP altogether after the launch of Cyberpunk 2077’s expansion, Phantom Liberty. We already know that the developers are bringing out a new installment into the marketplace. Thanks to The Gamer, we have a bit more insight into this project. For those unaware, the successor for Cyberpunk 2077 is only titled as Project Orion right now. But this project was mentioned in a recent earnings call.
According to the report, CD Projekt Red did alert investors that Project Orion would be hitting the research stage once they ended support for Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC. It’s expected that once this expansion reaches the marketplace, there will be time required for the studio to offer patches and updates. But once that stage ends, resources would be diverted toward Project Orion’s development.

While we don’t have a specific timeline of just when the resources would start hitting Project Orion, we have a slight window to work from. It looks like this sequel will be handled by the development team from their studio being opened up in Boston. That team will handle the game project, and it’s expected the studio will be operational at the start of 2024.
Right now, the focus is on Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty DLC. We know that this game will get a showcase during Summer Game Fest later this week. But outside of that, those in select cities around the world will get a chance to see this game in person. CD Projekt Revealed a short eight-city tour for this upcoming expansion. Meanwhile, we know that when Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty launches, it will be available only on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms. In the meantime, you can check out the trailer for Phantom Liberty in the video above.
