Does The Callisto Protocol Secretly Run Better Than The Dead Space Remake?

January 30, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

If you had assumed The Callisto Protocol was a poor imitation, you might have to change your tune now.

We have some surprising news to share, as it seems Dead Space Remake actually has lower than performance than The Callisto Protocol on some particular PC builds.

DSO Gaming did some testing recently for the Dead Space Remake, using the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090. The RTX 4090 is the top of the mountain for Nvidia graphics cards, and possibly the best card available in 2023 period. The talk among PC game influencers and press is that this card is the first real step to normalizing 4K and ray tracing in video games.

So, DSO used an RTX 4090 on their build while testing Dead Space Remake, and while they did not share full specs, claimed the CPU they used would not be a bottleneck. This probably means they used either an Intel i7 or i9 CPU, or the Ryzen 9 line of AM5 CPUs.

DSO found that Dead Space Remake cannot maintain a stable 60 FPS when they crank the levels up to Ultra, for the game to output in 4K. Most of the time, it will maintain or stay above this level. However, in the most demanding scenes, it can dip to as low as 50 FPS. Several lesser issues were also found, such as the lack of an FOV slider making it harder to play when the camera leans too close to Isaac.

DSO made a comparable test to Striking Distance Studios’ own version of space horror shooter, The Callisto Protocol. While the gap isn’t that big, The Callisto Protocol is able to maintain that 60 FPS performance with that RTX 4090.

This is interesting on several levels. For one, while EA’s Motive Studio was new to the Dead Space world, it has been around since 2017. It has quite a bit of experience under its belt at this point, having made both Star Wars Battlefront II and Star Wars Squadrons.

On the flip side, Striking Distance Studios under Krafton is a very new company, working for a publisher with less experience than EA. While Striking Distance Studios was comprised of a lot of former EA employees and other veterans, you expect the older studio to be better at this.

It is testament to the hard work Striking Distance Studios put towards The Callisto Protocol since its poor launch that they were able to turn their game around performance-wise so quickly. If fans had dismissed this game as a poor imitation of Dead Space, they should rethink that notion now.

In any case, Dead Space Remake is still a very good looking game, and PC players should focus on FSR 2.0 or DLSS 2 to get the most out of the game’s visuals while maintaining performance.
