When it comes to the end of the year sales, people are always curious about what titles did well and what surprises are on the charts. After all, a year is a long time, and there are plenty of ways for things to go. Yet you always expect the “usual suspects” to dominate the charts, given how much they sold or how well they were praised. Regarding Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, you expected the game to sell millions of units because of its pedigree and hype. It did just that and dominated the digital sales charts for Sony systems as a result.
Sony revealed its “most downloaded games” of 2022 and divided things into PS4 and PS5 categories. But on both charts, Modern Warfare 2 was the No.1 title, which shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. Again, it sold many millions, and people love that franchise. But what about the other games on the list?
Focusing on the PS5 to start, the No.2 title was God of War Ragnarok. That one is also not too much of a surprise. The game has been anticipated since it was confirmed to be coming to the PS5, and the results of Santa Monica Studio were not lost on critics and gamers. It was a sweeping epic and a worthy successor to the PS4 soft reboot.
The No.3 game on the PS5 list might surprise some of you, as it was NBA 2K23. There are a few ways to explain this high ranking. First, other titles, including one we’ll discuss soon, may have had more physical than digital copy sales. Second, the NBA season is going on right now, so that could’ve elevated people to buy the game. Third, the title underwent heavy revamps and featured content with Michael Jordan. So take your pick.
That brings us to the No.4 game on the PS5 list, Elden Ring. Yes, the “Game of the Year” in most people’s minds and the title that sold many units is only No.4 on the digital downloads list for PS5. But, as teased, it might be because more people bought the game’s physical copy versus the digital copy.
Rounding out the top five is Madden NFL 23, another sports game that sold very well, likely due to the ongoing football season.
As for the PS4, the No.2-5 games were GTA V, Minecraft, and Elden Ring. So there were some surprises on that system too.
