Dark Souls Remastered PC Servers Finally Back Online

November 9, 2022 by Alexandra Nicholson

Making a welcome return.

It’s taken quite a while, but it looks as though players of Dark Souls Remastered are finally going to be able to jump back into the game. In a new update from the official Dark Souls Twitter account and as reported in TheGamer, full online functionality and features have been restored to the game on PC.

The iconic dark fantasy title has spent almost an entire year offline, alongside the other two games in the Dark Souls trilogy, Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3. This came after a particularly nasty security exploit was discovered on the Dark Souls online servers earlier this year. FromSoftware has been hard at work ever since, with the developers taking the servers down in the first place to prevent players’ PCs from becoming vulnerable to the hacker’s intention of using remote code in-game. Dark Souls Remastered, the remaster of the original game, is the last of the trilogy to see its full online functionality restored.

Back in August, the servers were brought back online for Dark Souls 3, followed by the return of the Dark Souls 2 servers back in October. However, it wasn’t all good news for longstanding players of the franchise. Although the restoration of play for Dark Souls 2 was announced and positively received, it was also revealed that players would no longer be able to play the original edition of the game. Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition could not be resurrected for online play, which was put down primarily to “an ageing system” by FromSoftware. This means that players who do want to continue playing the original Dark Souls title will need to make sure they’ve bought Dark Souls Remastered, as that’s the version which is now fully functional again.

Either way, players are bound to be pleased with today’s news, after 290 days of their game being offline completely. They’ll be able to take part in the game’s full gamut of experiences which include both PvE and PvP content, invasions and a whole lot more. With the Dark Souls team thanking the community for their patience and support while fixes for the server exploit have been implemented, let’s hope that security has also been tightened up on the servers while they were at it. That way, such lengthy downtime can hopefully be prevented in future.

Dark Souls Remastered and the other games in the Dark Souls trilogy are now back online in full on PC. If you’re looking for the latest FromSoftware action, you’ll want to keep an eye on Elden Ring, as it seems that there may be a new DLC for the title on its way pretty soon.
