In case you haven't heard yet, We love Rayman Origins! It seems though that the creator of the game isn't a fan of Mario games. This is odd not only because Mario is pretty much the granddaddy to all platform games, but also because … well … who doesn't like Mario?
"I will tell you something terrible — I don't really enjoy playing Mario games," Michel Ancel said in an interview with Gamasutra. "I don't like gliding, I don't like its inertia, and I don't like not being able to give some slaps! It's a fabulous series, and I understand that people love it, but it's not my cup of tea.”
"I used to prefer Ghosts n' Goblins, Heart of Darkness, Another World — games with a focus on the narrative side. Beyond that, I find Mario's controls very interesting, but I don't buy it. I can't help but seeing the ropes of the game, even if it works. The game is thrilling, obviously." While I obviously don't see it the way he does, he still makes some valid points.
It is rather interesting though to see the views and works of someone who hasn't been influenced by a Mario Bros. game. With the huge audience and influence that Mario holds in the gaming world maybe its a good thing to have a developer here and there that aren't influenced by the series. It can give us fun original games, and Rayman Origins apparently, and I don't think anyone will complain about that.
