Forspoken is a game with a bit of a tricky history so far. It was announced a while back with great curiosity from fans and critics. However, over time, things got a little tougher. First, reports came out about the quality of the game, and then the title kept getting pushed back. It was supposed to release around this time, but then it got pushed back to January 23rd, 2023. Hopefully, that’s the last of the delays, if for no other reason than the team behind the game is already planning what to do with the game after January 2025.
Confused? A new highlights trailer for the PS5 has emerged, with key details about upcoming titles. For example, Final Fantasy XVI and Forspoken are shown in the highlights and teases. Both have text at the bottom of the screen indicating they are timed-exclusive games. In the latter’s case, they note that it’ll come out in 2023 and be an exclusive on the PS5 until January 2025. That’s a long exclusivity window. The other game will only be exclusive for only six months.
Perhaps it’s because they feel this game deserves a longer window on the PS5 before it goes to other systems. It’s hard to say. However, we need to note that Square Enix is the team behind both games, so it’s curious that their biggest series is getting a lesser exclusivity window than the untested and unknown IP.
Forspoken puts you in the role of a young woman named Frey. She’s taken from her home in New York City and thrown into a fantasy world full of magic and creatures. Adding to the mess is a bracelet wrapped around her wrist that helps her do magic. She calls it “cuff.”
As Frey traverses the land, she learns its history and realizes it was once a prosperous land. But then, a corruption known as the Break transformed everything into the monstrous state she now sees. Frey is unaffected by this blight and will use her magic to fight back and try to help the land as best she can.
Exploration and magic are the cruxes of the game. So first, you’ll be able to parkour across the land to see what it has to offer. Then, mix and match spells and abilities to create a magical playstyle that is all your own.
We’ll find out in January just how worthy this exclusive is.
