Gotham Knights Removes Denuvo Protection

October 27, 2022 by Todd Black

Well, so much for that!

Denuvo is one of the more controversial programs out there. On the surface, it’s a needed entity as it’s anti-tamper software. One that makes it harder for people to “crack the code” of the game to do whatever they want with it, including pirating it on the internet for people to get without issue. That hurts developers, and they have enough issues as it is. The problem is that gamers know Denuvo hinders the performance of titles and demands certain things on PC to keep running. It’s very annoying, and gamers have rallied against it. Gotham Knights had it on their PC build when the title launched, but now, they’ve removed it.

That is important because it’s only been a week since the game’s launch. Usually, such changes only happen much later in the run. But, with outrage about Denuvo really high and other PC games having issues with their playability thanks to the program, the team at WB Montreal didn’t want to deal with it anymore. Plus, one of the biggest complaints about the game was its performance issues. Even on PC, the game could have flowed more smoothly and played better than the Batman Arkham titles that came before them.

Plus, recall those games came out years ago, so if anything, the new title should’ve exceeded what they did, not regress. Sadly, this has been a common thread of thought amongst critics and gamers since the title launched last week. While some people, including a particular legendary comic writer, have been having fun with the game, many people aren’t as rosy about it. They’ve critiqued everything from the UI, as it looks like a mobile game at points, to the repetitiveness of the combat, the plot at specific points, the co-op, and more. Even the tinier details have been put into the spotlight, like how you can’t pause the game as you play it!

There are bright points to the game, but the divisive reaction proves that there are just as many “down points” to it. Perhaps WB Montreal did the Denuvo removal as a “sign of good faith” from the team that they would try and fix the game as best they could. A nice gesture, but that removal will only solve some things, as you can guess.

So what happens now? That’s partially up to you. If you haven’t played the game yet, you might want to wait a little longer until potential future updates arrive to “smooth out the issues.” Or, you can get it right now to see if you like it or don’t. Gotham Knights is a decent game in most people’s eyes. It just didn’t live up to the potential that was put on it.
