CDPR’s New Boston Studio Will Develop Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel

October 5, 2022 by Alexandra Nicholson

Core team members from the Polish studio are moving Stateside.

After yesterday’s huge flurry of announcements and reveals, some further details are emerging on CD Projekt RED’s expansion plans. In particular, some new insights into the planned sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and which teams will be working on it.

The sequel game, known only at the moment as Project Orion, was revealed yesterday as part of a wider string of reveals in CD Projekt RED’s long-term strategy update presentation. The impending follow-up to the successful yet somewhat controversial Cyberpunk 2077 has so far only been promised to “prove the full power and potential of the Cyberpunk universe.” Other than that, there’s not a huge amount of detail available on the sequel as yet.

However, a number of key developers from CD Projekt RED have taken to Twitter to share a few further nuggets of information. Perhaps the most prominent of these is Cyberpunk 2077 Quest Director Paweł Sasko, who was also a Lead Quest Designer on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It appears that Sasko and his team members are currently hard at work putting the finishing touches on Cyberpunk 2077′s first and likely only DLC expansion, Phantom Liberty. However, he has revealed that once that has been deployed for the base game, he and a number of other, crucial Cyberpunk 2077 development team members will be upping sticks and heading to America to work on the game’s sequel.

I'm moving to Boston together with the core team responsible for Cyberpunk 2077 to establish new studio and be the foundation for the North American team.

Working together with the Vancouver crew and the devs from Warsaw we are going to deliver you a banging next game! 🔥❤️ pic.twitter.com/1UYEzQFCSW

It appears that the main bulk of the development work on the future Cyberpunk 2077 title will take place at CD Projekt RED’s newly-announced Boston studio. Sasko explains that it’ll also be part of his role there to “establish” the new studio, which will be the “foundation for the North American team.” This is clearly a major and exciting geographical and company expansion for CD Projekt RED, which will be collaborating with the devs back in its native Warsaw as well as those based at CDPR’s Vancouver-based studio. It’s not known as yet how many of the core Cyberpunk 2077 team will be joining Sasko at the new Boston studio, but it’s clear that CD Projekt RED is keen on making some big moves to support their ambitious multi-game plans for the coming years.

People have been wondering how a "new studio" for #Cyberpunk2077 would look like.
Rest assured, Project Orion will be in the best hands with some of our finest @CDPROJEKTRED veterans you know, ready to hire new talent and make an amazing game that we can all be proud of! 🔥 https://t.co/jf4geCTXyS

Fellow Cyberpunk 2077 Level Designer Miles Tost also expanded a little on how the new US-based strategy will work to build the future of the IP. Explaining that the upcoming sequel would be in the care of CD Projekt RED’s best developers, it seems the team are keen to reassure those who may be concerned about a repeat of the original game’s rather rocky launch and post-launch service. Hopefully, though, history won’t repeat itself in the new, dark future that the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel clearly intends to deliver, thanks to the growth and potentially wider capabilities of the company through its new studio.
