Tom Clancy’s The Division will have some particular DLC plans.
Creative director Magnus Jansen seems to want to shy away from the term microtransactions, but the DLC plans definitely do include some microtransactions.
To be specific, there will be both free updates and paid expansions. There will also be vanity items, which are, in essence microtransactions.
Ubisoft’s desire to move away from the term microtransactions would seem to stem from the stigma the term has, particularly from associated with social and mobile games with free-to-play mechanics. Perhaps the bad buzz regarding microtransactions from their Assassin’s Creed games was also what motivated them.
If this was the case, however, they shouldn’t be so afraid to use the term at all. Of course, there are other games, like Path of Exile, which do just fine, and even have good reputations, stemming from the way they sell vanity items as microtransactions. Fans are generally satisfied when they do not affect gameplay.
In any case, Ubisoft’s wording can cause more confusion than necessary. Do you agree with their stance or no? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
