Insanely enough, Star Citizen has now hit over a million in funding.
As of this writing, that’s $ 100,038,752, and 1,087,088 Star Citizens. Funding for the project didn’t really go away, but it was certainly jumpstarted by the recent reveal of the Squadron 42 module.
While the crowdfund is an unqualified success, the popularity of the project remains a mixed bag. At this point, if you know about the game at all, you are either highly skeptical Cloud Imperium Games can pull it off, or extremely confident that it will happen. There is just enough leeway that you can reasonably trust or doubt the project, and for either response to be true. Of course, part of this is simply because it hasn’t been done before, under these circumstances.
Before you start ranting that this is way too much money invested in a video game, Activision invested half a billion dollars into Destiny. Certainly, one could question whether that much money could have been used for, say, cancer research instead. However, the point is this isn’t even the most money any game company has invested into a game. It just happens to be the most by far invested into one by a crowdfunding community of many small backers.
