Disney and Square Enix developed plans for an animated television adaptation of Kingdom Hearts, but ultimately shelved the project.
Did You Know Gaming has revealed that the adaptation went into production following the release of the original Kingdom Hearts on PS2 back in 2002. Disney Television storyboard artist Seth Kearsley was hired to direct and write a potential pilot for the series.
While the show tested well with audiences, Disney and Square Enix decided to cancel the project as it represented a "vastly different interpretation" of the original game's story. As there were plans for additional games, the companies were concerned the series would conflict with the overarching plot.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is in development for PS4 and Xbox One and will include a world inspired by Big Hero 6.
