Remember Relic Entertainment’s Impossible Creatures? Nordic Games has revived the RTS wonder, and published it to Steam.
If you remember Impossible Creatures from 2002, you likely remember it more as a curious, perhaps brave, experiment, than an actual good game. It was a real time strategy, but with a unique hook. You made your own units by combining different animal DNA to make hybrid grunts.
The game’s plot served to justify its premise, but for what it’s worth, it was proper pulp fiction goodness. Protagonist Rex Chance visits his deceased father’s island, and learns about the DNA recombining Sigma technology. Using the technology, he builds animal hybrid armies to fight other armies, made by his father’s scientist rival, tycoon Upton Julius, and his cronies.
Impossible Creatures was the world of Relic Entertainment, who worked on RTS series such as Homeworld, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, and Company of Heroes. Obviously, it does not stand on the same footing as these other RTS games,it does have a loyal fanbase.
If you happen to be one of those loyal fans, you’ll be happy to learn that Nordic Games brought Impossible Creatures back via Steam. It doesn’t look that much different, but Impossible Creatures has been ported for modern Windows systems, and comes with Insect Invasion, Mod SDK and all the patches, uses Steam Cloud and Steam friend Invite, and of course, has online multiplayer. it's probably the best way you'll get to play the game, unless you're a DRM-free advocate and waiting for it to go to GOG.com.
