Rise of the Tomb Raider is becoming one of the most anticipated games in a season already full of massive AAA releases like Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Call of Duty Black Ops 3, and Fallout 4. To give Rise of the Tomb Raider the same launch date as Fallout 4 is a bold show of confidence. Or was it the safest bet?
"The challenge with Tomb Raider is if you go a week later you're against Star Wars Battlefront, if you go a week earlier you'll be against Call of Duty Black Ops 3 and if you go two weeks earlier you're against Halo," explains Xbox Head of Marketing Aaron Greenberg. However, wait too long and the consumer runs out of money after a robust season of releases. "We felt like the Fallout audience–they are not direct competitors per se, but you are right, it’s two big, big titles launching at the same time and we hope people will buy both.”
But Greenberg is not worried about Fallout 4 eating up Tomb Raider sales. "You just got to launch and stick with the date and feel confident that the game still stands up and we believe it will," he reassures. "It's a fantastic title.”
Rise of the Tomb Raider and Fallout 4 are set to launch November 10. Fallout 4 will be available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. While Tomb Raider is an exclusive launch for Xbox 360 and One only, the PS4 and PC versions of the game will be out in 2016.
