Remeber Dead Island's heartbreaking, artsy announcement trailer that wound up having almost nothing to do with the final game? Well, it looks like it's headed for the big screen.
Lionsgate Entertainment has announced that they'll be optioning the rights to make a movie based on Dead Island with the now infamous trailer serving as "primary creative inspiration." According to the official press release, the Dead Island movie will seek to innovate the genre by incorporating the trailer's focus on "human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling."
The project is still early in development, but production will be helmed by The Mummy's Sean Daniel. Stefan Sonnenfeld, who's worked on high profile projects with like the Transformers series and J.J. Abram's Cloverfield, will be co-producing.
Really, though, this sheds light on an new untapped vein for video game movies – vague, dubiously linked tie-ins. Just imagine: Michael Bay helming a blockbuster based on Battlefield 3's cover art. Spielberg exploring the themes of Super Mario Galaxy 2's start screen. Wes Anderson encapsulating the shame you feel buying a new Sonic game. It's a brave new world, folks.
