Splatoon: Don’t Flounder Through Flounder Heights, The Latest Map Hitting Tonight

August 20, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Flounder Heights is centered around a structure that looks like danchi, a kind of apartment complex in Japan.

In less than 12 hours, Nintendo is releasing a new map for Splatoon, called Flounder Heights.

Between the news for the returning Global Testfire, the Transformers Splatfest, and the eSports tournament in Japan, it seems like this news would have fallen under the radar, but here we are with something new for Splatoon coming up in a matter of hours.

Flounder Heights is centered around a structure that looks like a tall apartment building. In fact, a fan has pointed out that the map is based on danchi, a kind of apartment complex in Japan which dates back to before WW2. (If you are inclined, you can read more about danchi here.)

This adds up to the 11th map, and based on the information from the last Splatoon Direct, there could be 14 overall. This might be a misinterpretation, but if not, Splatoon may only have three maps left.

In any case, as you can see in the table below, Splatoon is actually set to outperform Mario Kart 8 in its native Japan. With each week the gap between the two games is going down and down, so much so that it looks like Splatoon will pass Mario Kart 8 by the 14th week.

Getting back into Flounder Heights, the towering complex demands players make a choice on how to tackle it. They could chance the rooftop and hope not to get stuck in a pitch battle for territory, or they could try sneaking past any campers on top by passing through the middle.

How would you handle the dilemma of Flounder Heights? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
