When it comes to doing comic book roles, especially ones for TV shows and movies where many embrace where they came from in the comics, it’s always important to have a good “understanding” of who the character is. As well as their history and how they can be portrayed in a meaningful way. That’s how many standout comic book performances have happened over time. But if you’re expecting that for the upcoming Morbius film, there might be some issues with that.
We already know that star of the film Jared Leto did a LOT to get “into character” for the titular Michael Morbius, but as for the perceived villain in Matt Smith…it wasn’t exactly that easy. Because his character of Loxias Crown left him confused:
“The truth is, I wasn’t aware of the great big history of the character in many respects,” Smith told ScreenRant. “Because the script I was presented with doesn’t really delve into the past of him – or indeed the future. And isn’t someone else playing him? It’s all a bit confusing to me, to be honest with you. I took as my Bible just the actual script, is the honest truth of it. And it was all a bit odd whether it was Loxias [Crown] or not. I’m still not quite sure, to be honest. ”
That’s…not something you want to hear, to be honest. In the comics, Crown was a friend of Morbius who got bit by the living vampire and thus got turned into the villain known as Hunger. In one of the trailers for the film, we see Smith’s character cite that it’s up to him and Michael to show the world the pain that they suffered once upon a time.
So is he the villain? Or is there something else going on here with this film? We don’t know, but we’ll find out soon…
