Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands: Do You Have to Play Borderlands First?

March 21, 2022 by Carley Garcia

If you’ve missed out on the Borderlands series, you should play them–but not because of Tiny Tina.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S this Friday, March 25. Fans of the Borderlands series have been anxious for the title’s release for months, with 20 minutes of gameplay footage unveiled last month showing nothing but fast-talking action fans have come to expect from a Gearbox title.

Tiny Tina first appears in Borderlands 2 as an NPC. An unstable 13-year-old who loves to blow things up, the explosives expert also appeared in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 3. While the character was the main focus of the fourth Borderlands 2 DLC Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, Wonderlands is the first time the scrappy youth will be the main character in a full title.

With all this talk of Borderlands, those who haven’t played the previous Gearbox titles might be feeling a little left out. But not to worry–Wonderlands is for everyone.

Can You Play Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Without Playing Borderlands?

When Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was first announced in June 2021, the devs at Gearbox were quick to explain that familiarity with Borderlands isn’t needed to enjoy the new game. While the game was inspired by Assault on Dragon’s Keep, it’s set in an entirely new environment with a stand-alone plot. The game will introduce a bevy of new characters, but those who are familiar with Borderlands will notice a few nods to past games and personalities.

“If you’ve never played a Borderlands game before, you can absolutely jump right in and enjoy it just as much,” said senior producer Kayla Belmore at the Gearbox E3 2021 Showcase.

Of course, familiarity with the Borderlands franchise may add more depth to the title, but absolutely anyone can look forward to wrecking enemies and getting up to plenty of nonsense when the game drops later this week. The game will offer online or local split-screen multiplayer.
