Let’s rewind the clock about a decade, shall we? The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been out for a few years and is doing REALLY well. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy has just ended and Warner Bros decides to go and make their own cinematic universe to match their rival (and cash in on the big revenues they’re getting). They start off strong with Man of Steel, and then when Batman V Superman came out, WB started getting cold feet. Because while they were making money, they weren’t getting the critical love that the MCU was known for. As a result…they started screwing with things, not the least of which was director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad film.
This film was the third to release in the DCEU, and not unlike Zack Snyder, David Ayer had a grand vision for what his film would be like. But, after what happened with BVS (in terms of critics “not liking it), WB decided to make Ayer recut his film and put things in there he didn’t want (just like what happened to Zack Snyder multiple times). As a result, Suicide Squad did make money, but it’s widely considered the worst of the DCEU films.
But, just like Zack Snyder, fans learned what WB did, and Ayer himself admitted that there was an “Ayer Cut” of the movie that showed HIS vision and was totally different than what was shown in theaters. As a result, a #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement was started. And on March 18th, the 1-year anniversary of the release of the Snyder Cut, fans did this…and Ayer couldn’t help but blush at it…

Yep, and fans are demanding now more than ever for #ReleaseTheAyerCut so that the director can have his due. With the new Discovery merger in WB, that might just happen if the right pieces fall into place.
